It is smaller to reduce buoyancy when the pipe is less than full. This buoyancy would tend to lift the inlet causing it to float upward and could reduce flow through the skimmer. The arm is vented (see cut sheets) to allow the orifice size to control the flow rate. The exception is the 6” skimmer uses a 6” Sch 40 PVC due to difficulty ... Plasticizer Effects in the PVC Membrane of the Dibasic Phosphate Selective Electrode. PubMed Central. Carey, Clifton. 2016-01-01. The PVC membrane of an ion-selective electrode (ISE) sensitive to dibasic phosphate ions (HPO4-ISE) has not been optimized for maximum selectivity, sensitivity, and useable ISE lifetime and further work was necessary to improve its performance.

:( According to my calculations 1 section of pvc pipe (4in diameter*10ft length) should be able to hold about 7000 lbs! That's when I realized I needed help if I wanted to calculate the buoyancy of my pontoons with any kind of accuracy. I am planning on using several lengths of pvc pipe that are 4 in. diameter and 10ft long.

A 55 gallon drum will displace approximately 440 pounds in fresh water-subtract the actual weight (22 lbs for a plastic barrel) and off you go! Hope this helps.

If the SG is different, additional buoyancy = plastic volume* (1 - SG) (so reduction in buoyancy if SG > 1). Just using water weight would still be a bit out if it were steel pipe, but OP said PVC, and buoyancy overestimated, but not by much. As Tornado said, thickness of 2" Sch. 40 pipe is 0.154".
